FTSF ~ I tried to cook...

Linking up for the first time for FTSF!
This week's prompt is, I tried to cook...

...homemade ravioli. I love ravioli with meat sauce and decided to try and make it at home. I am not a fan of the store bought frozen kind. They always seem to be watery when they are done cook, no matter how well I drain them. So, I watched several YouTube videos and then headed to the kitchen. I don't have a pasta maker (mistake number 1) so I made the dough and started rolling it out with a rolling pin. That was a BAD idea! In all the videos they say you have to get the dough to a quarter of an inch. Well, first I didn't have a clue how thin that was and second my hands started hurting way before it was even close to that. I continued on and got it to what I thought was a quarter of an inch. Next, I cut the circles, filled them with the cheese and put them in the pot of boiling water. I can't remember how long I cooked them but I try 3 different lengths of time and they were completely disgusting every time! I am not sure what I did wrong, whether it was they were too thick or I didn't cook them long enough or maybe I just didn't make the dough right. Whatever the reason, I have decided I will never be making homemade pasta of any kind ever again. Needless to say the takeout menus came out next and I just ordered ravioli, haha!

What have you tried to cook before that didn't turn out right?!

Heheh I remember as a kid my Mum made homemade pasta, and like you, just the once. We had giant ravioli nearly the size of the entire plate, and to this day my Dad hates pasta.

Woman, you are brave! I wouldn't tackle that. I'm impressed. Did they fall apart when you cooked them or did they just not taste right? Thanks for linking up!

I just saw that you live in VA. I grew up there (Alexandria). I love meeting people who live or grew up in my old hood. :-)

Oh Krystle, I give total A for effort and am with Kate that you are totally brave in my book for even trying this one. But am with you on the take out menus at that point. Thanks for linking up with us!! :)

haha i've always wanted to try making pasta, but have never attempted it! You can cheat though...you can buy egg roll wrappers in the produce section and use those to make homemade ravioli. Egg roll wrappers are just sheets of fresh pasta. I have used them to make lasagna and manicotti and it made the best lasagna and manicotti i've ever tasted! One day I will attempt ravioli...one day.

I give you a ton of credit for trying, make homemade ravioli is a pain in the butt. :)

I enjoy cooking/baking and there are so many things I've totally botched!
In one bread recipe it called for 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda. I added 1 1/2 TABLESPOONS. Whoops! My bread did not turn out right.
There are countless frosting recipes I've successfully laid to rest.
I haven't ever tried homemade pasta, but by the sounds of it, I probably shouldn't. :)

Wow you were brave to try that on a whim. I don't some of the fussy details for making a dessert but I would NEVERY tackle making my own pasta.

Your pasta rolling experience reminds me of a similar situation I faced a few years back. I was participating in a monthly recipe challenge with some friends, and it was to do with soup, so I got it into my head to make oyster crackers to go along with mine. If you think rolling out pasta is bad, try rolling out those things!! Like for making biscuits with layers, you roll it out, fold it, roll it out again, fold it, roll it out again ... I was tempted to throw it on a try on the floor, put another tray over it and walk on it until it flattened out. Each time I had to roll it, it was getting stiffer and stiffer. Thought my arms would break! LOL As for your ravioli, try wonton wrappers next time you want to use your own filling. :)

I would never even attempt to make my own ravioli - I just skip right to ordering takeout!

Oh gosh, I'd NEVER try to make homemade pasta but I love it so much when I find a restaurant that serves it. I love ravioli, too. Luckily, we have a great delivery place that does the pasta and sauce just right.
